REMOTE SENSING

Resource managers and ecologists need a wide variety of information that deal with the characteristics and the conditions of the ecosystems they are dealing with. Remote sensing, in the form of low altitude aerial imagery and satellite imagery, have been used for many years to obtain important information. The availability of multispectral, and now hyperspectral scanner and radar data from aircraft and satellites at high altitudes, along with computer aided analyses, has created a tremendous increase in the quality of the results that can be obtained using remote sensing capabilities. Recent developments in GIS technology, coupled with improved remote sensing technologies, have led to powerful tools capable of distinguishing vegetation patterns, species dynamics, diseases in forests and development patterns and rates.

AERIAL IMAGES

3 meter compressed (ECW) USGS DOQ aerial images are now available for downloading and viewing. In order to view the images two files must be loaded onto your local drive. Both files are located in a WinZip file. The first file (ecw) contains the actual data layer and the second contains the georeference inforation (ers).

The first step is to download the zip file and extract the two files. In Netscape downloading can be accomplished by pressing shift while holding the mouse cursor over the file and pressing the left mouse button. After the two files are extracted they maybe using free software (ER Viewer 2.0) provided by ERMapper (www.ermapper.com), or with ArcView and other GIS products with the appropriate extensions, also available at ERMapper. The files are georeferenced using NAD83, State Plane Coordinates.

1 meter and 6 meter individual and composit USGS DOQ Quads (15,000 to 20,000 meg file size) are also available unpon request, including all of the files listed below.
